facebook.

I overheard an interesting conversation in the gym yesterday. A man was approached by two of his friends while stretching.

Gym Rat A: “Hey guy, I saw your status this morning. What happened?”

‘Gym Rat B’ then proceeds to tell them how his long-distance relationship with his girlfriend has just ended.

Gym Rat B: “Yeah, I was talking to Rob about it last night, and the first thing he asked me was, ‘Dude, when are you going to change your status on Facebook!’ I just broke up with my girlfriend, and he’s  worried about Facebook!?”

Gym Rat C: “Harsh.”

Gym Rat B: “But, yeah, I did change my status this morning. I saw that she already changed hers last night, so, yeah. So, anyhow, now that I’m single again, I gotta work on these abs, man!”

I use Facebook every day, but this interchange still seemed jarring to me. I think it’s interesting how one’s online presence has become a natural extension of one’s real-world persona. I guess it’s not a bad thing, so long as people are still having face-to-face conversations about their lives…even if it’s about their online/real lives.
